(Miami, FL August 21, 2015) – City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commission Chairman Wifredo “Willy” Gort joined Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa as well as city administrators and area residents at the ground breaking ceremony for the Antonio Maceo Park New Community Building Addition on Monday, August 24, 2015. “I am excited about the renovations of Maceo Park,a family park, where our seniors and children enjoy a better quality of life. I would like to thank our County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa for collaborating with our City,” stated Mayor Regalado.

Design and construction of the extension to the existing community center building will provide additional programs and services for the surrounding community. The new building of approximately 4,600 sq. ft. will incorporate a large multi-purpose space in addition to a computer room, an activity room, and new support spaces. The building will provide an area for after school, cultural and arts programs for children within the school ages of Kindergarten through 12th grade. The existing community center building will be remodeled and reconfigured to provide for additional classroom areas, storage, warming kitchen and serving area, administrative offices and expanding the existing restrooms. “We are looking forward to the expansion to Antonio Maceo Park which will provide better services to the residents in the area,” said Commission Chairman Gort. Additional work also includes modifying the entrance to the park and expanding the parking lot to add 28 parking spaces, along with tree relocation to provide for shaded areas. Construction will begin September 2015 and will last approximately one (1) year.

The project’s total cost of approximately $1.82 million was funded by Miami-Dade County’s GOB, Homeland Defense Bonds Series 3 and City of Miami’s Impact Fees. ” What great pleasure it brings me to join the City of Miami in celebrating the ground breaking of what will be an expanded multipurpose facility at Antonio Maceo Park. I am very proud to have secured the $1.5 million of GOB Funds needed to double the square footage of this facility which has been a landmark in our community, especially for the elderly who for so many years have enjoyed daytime activities at Antonio Maceo Park. By working together, we are providing our elderly, our youngsters, and the entire community with better facilities and better services where our residents need it most,” said Miami- Dade County Commissioner Sosa. This project is supported by the Building Better Communities Bond Program and the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County. Ferguson, Glasgow, Schuster, Soto, Inc. designed the building which will be constructed by Harbour Construction.
